Verulam community gets millions in land reform compensation

Author: Verulam

South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mcebisi Skwatsha, together with KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cyril Xaba, handed over R5,7 million in settlements to beneficiaries of the Verulam Mission Land Claim on Friday.

Speaking to 52 household representatives and 217 beneficiaries, Skwatsha said that the handover was significant as it returned a sense of dignity to those who were “robbed of their birthrights, robbed of their identities, robbed of their traditions, robbed of their wealth, robbed of their freedom, robbed of their dignity.”

He said the settlement was testament to the beneficiaries’ tenacious fight to claim what was rightfully theirs.
