Peter Setou

Peter Setou obtained his law degree (B Juris) from the University of the Western Cape. He has attended a number of management development programs including an Executive Leadership Programme with the University of Cape Town.

He has held several prominent positions over the years, including with the North West Consumer Council, National Department of Welfare and Population Development, Micro Finance Regulatory Council and National Credit Regulator, Stanford Holdings, as well as a lecture with the Centre for Financial Inclusion (University of Pretoria). He has served on several committees of the South African Law Reform Commission.

Mazwi Mkhulisi

Mazwi Mkhulisi has extensive experience in leading engagements for social development in multi-disciplinary settings. In his role, Vumelana’s facilitated deal portfolio has grown from 4 in 2013 to 22 at the end of 2021.

Before joining Vumelana, he worked for the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency to establish and grow a partnerships programme for the authority and its stakeholders.

Prior to that, he was part of the multi-disciplinary team that worked on the Maloti-Drakensberg Trans-frontier Conservation and Development Programme (2004 to 2007), where he led stakeholder engagement in the Eastern Cape for biodiversity conservation and social development objectives.

Mazwi has completed a Social Entrepreneurship Programme with GIBS to advance the application of business thinking to social development. He holds a Master’s degree in Social Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and has co-authored papers on conservation and land reform.

Brian Whittaker

Brian Whittaker was the founding Executive Director of Vumelana. He has served on the boards of several organisations directed at promoting social and economic development and is the former Chief Executive of the Business Trust and past Chairman of the Jobs Fund Investment Committee. His work has focused on building cross-sector partnerships for development.

Alicia Peter

Alicia Peter joined Vumelana in 2015 as Financial Accountant and has been Finance Manager from 2020. She has a BCom in Managerial Accounting and Finance and Economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Between 2007 and 2015, Alicia worked in the property industry as Portfolio Accountant for the Broll and Eris Property Groups. Prior to that, she spent some time working at Sasol Gas and Motseng Marriott as Financial Accountant.

Nigel Mcclure

Nigel McClure served articles at Whiteley Brothers, a forerunner firm to Deloittes, and worked in corporate finance at Barclays and Standard Bank including project finance for capital projects. In 1986 he moved to the Anglo American Corporation and was Group accountant at Mondi for 10 years and financial manager at Anglo Ferrous Metals & Industries division for 9 years. Between 2006 and 2012 he was Financial Manager at the Business Trust and from 2012 Company Secretary and Financial Manager (till 2020) at Vumelana.

Lisa Herbst

Lisa Herbst has been with Vumelana since its inception in 2012. She worked at Ernst & Young in the Audit Business Unit, before taking up a position as a Forensic Business Intelligence Associate in the Forensic Investigation and Dispute Services Unit (also at Ernst & Young). In 2008 Lisa joined the Business Trust. She has a BA (Cum Laude), BA Honours in Criminology (Cum Laude) and BPsych degrees, all from the University of Pretoria.

Programmes and Office Administrator

Mpho Thaba

Mpho Thaba joined Vumelana in 2015. She has over 20 years of administrative experience in office and relationship management in both the public and private sectors. She worked as a receptionist at EPI-USE and iLab before joining the Development Bank of Southern Africa, where she stayed for 10 years. At the end of her career at the Bank, Mpho was the Executive Secretary for the Investment Banking Division. She is involved in various HIV-Aids education initiatives in the community.

Office Assistant

Gloria Nhlapo

Gloria Nhlapo has been with Vumelana since 2018. Prior to joining Vumelana, she was the Office Assistant at MWeb for over 10 years. Gloria also serves as a member on the Immaculate Heart of Mary Solidarity at the Alexandra Catholic Church.
